The clouds the horizon melting into the sea or fields or saltmarshes. The sense of expanse and isolation intrigue me. At once the scenes I choose to paint can be luscious and enthralling during a summers day and returning to a familiar space in the winter months can inspire an altogether different narrative of cold lone walking . This is what drives me to capture this sense of natural change. The recent floods have again created upheaval in this familiar landscape. Shaping and altering, new paths and cuts and lines and stretches to explore and begin to understand. My paintings begin with long walks in all weathers, making sketches and colour notes particularly around Stiffkey, Cley and Morston. I use these as references to create paintings back in my studio in North Norfolk. I paint on hand stretched calico and make my own gesso, oil paints, dammar resins and varnishes using recipes dated to the old masters. (Fiona Roberts)
